Title: Sharing Is Healing (A Holocaust Survivor's Story)

Author: Noemi Ban with Ray Wolpow

Copyright 2003 Noemi Ban and Ray Wolpow (Holocaust Educational Publications)

Targeted grade level: 6th grade

Pages: 69

This book is wonderful for children in grades 4 - 6 to give an illustration of a first hand look at the Holocaust during WWII and the reality of concentration camps. Noemi Ban survived Auschwitz, which was the Nazi's largest concentration camp, located in Poland. She discusses the series of events beginning with Hitler's invasion of Hungary and how she and her family were imprisoned in their own home because they were Jewish. After a short period of time, they were taken from their home, loaded onto cattle cars and taken through a horrific trip to their new "home", Auschwitz.

Noemi tells about how she was separated from her family and the torturous conditions that she had to endure to survive. This book is very informative, but is kept simple so that all students can understand. In the Introduction, the reader is told that Noemi is a 6th grade teacher and she "wrote this book thinking of the many students that she has taught. Some of them were good readers. Others were learning how to read better. Noemi wanted to make sure that all students could read it." Additional information can be found at the bottom of nearly every page, further clarifying terms that may not already by known by the reader.

The main reason this book was written is to share Noemi's story of hope. She has become successful in her life because she rose from a nearly hopeless situation and has learned to see life and all its challenges as a "gift". She continues to share her story because she says that she heals a little more each time she shares it. Noemi Ban says that "Sharing is healing".
